Wart Treatment Reviews

Warts on the body are tumor like substances caused by the human papilloma virus (HPV). They generally do not cause a serious health hazard but can be disfiguring. However, as they are caused by a virus they are contagious from skin to skin contact and should be eradicated to avoid transmission to others.

Conversely, warts occurring in the genitalia, genital warts, are very important to treat as transmission is most certainly to occur via unprotected sexual contact. In females, HPV has been linked to at least 90% of cervical cancer patients. Therefore, females need to take extra precaution to avoid infection, or to seek proper treatment if diagnosed with HPV or genital warts.

As warts occur on the skin only, and are not systemic, some antiviral treatments applied locally have shown good results to eliminate them.

Prescription

Imiquimod, also referred to as Aldara. This is a topical ointment that helps the body's immune system fight the wart virus. Product is not approved by the FDA for common warts. It is expensive, and response is rather poor as compared to other available treatments listed above. It is available by prescription only, but this means at least you stand a better chance of your insurance covering it depending on your policy.

Cryosurgery, this process requires an office visit to your doctor to freeze the wart, generally with liquid nitrogen. A blister is then created, after which the desire is for the wart and surrounding dead skin to fall off. Usually 3-5 treatments at the doctor’s office is needed. More difficult or stubborn warts often take dozens of treatments with multiple office visits.

Laser treatment - there are two basic methods. The first is a pulse dye laser. Such works by selective absorption by blood cells. The second is with CO2 lasers which works by selective absorption by water molecules. Skin and wart tissue are vaporized and destroyed in this process. Both laser treatments can be painful, expensive, and can cause scarring. However, many are covered by insurance, depending on your policy. Pulse dye lasers tend to be less destructive and with less skin damage, albeit scarring is a possibility.

New – Fluorouracil. This treatment inhibits DNA synthesis. This is currently being used as an experimental wart treatment by doctors. It is a topical application applied directly to the wart and then covered with an adhesive strip. A pumice stone is used to scrape dead tissue. Initial reports indicate extended amount of treatment and time is needed for complete elimination of warts.
